Autumn Retreat

We are islands, lost
uninhabited lumps
barren rock
shrouded in grey fog

We keep our distance
watch the flick-twinkling
of city lights
night dancing disco
across rippling lake
feel wet water splash
waves rising above our shore

We do not know
how long we have lived here
each season unfolds
unnoticed in our mist
the monotony aging
our hardened skin
our neighbors dying
shedding auburn leaves

We have become islands
oblivious to pain
isolated from civilization
stuck in our ways
unable to move

           Leaf Angel

You lie on damp ground
cradled in leaf cloud bassinette
golden feather nest, earthen brown
wind lullaby near ears
giggles dancing from your lips

You wave your hands
at migrating geese
fingers opening and closing
sunlight sliding across your face
the last tumble of warmth
rustling along your skin
before autumn’s breath
sneaks, kisses your skin
your arms and legs
sweeping fall blankets
like angel in snow.
