Getting Your Poetry Out There
J. Graham Ducker

Eventually most poets want to get their poems ‘out there’. Once you do, the experience has unexpected results: the poet begins to see his/her poems from the reader’s perspective.

This can be done by joining a poetry group that meet once a month and where poems can be shared and discussed. Another venue in getting poetry 'out there' are Open Mike Poetry Events that are often listed in the Entertainment section of the community newspaper, college papers and writers groups.

Investigate taking out a membership in various established poetry associations such as The Ontario Poetry Society (TOPS) or The Canadian Federation of Poets. They offer many contests and anthologies, as well as instances of open mikes where you can meet other poets.

If you feel adventuresome, assemble a selection of your ‘favourites’ and make a chapbook that can be given to friends and sold / traded at open mikes.

If there is a group / groups in your area that meet or hold open mikes, then you are
fortunate. Support it by attending, participation and assisting in any way you can so that it will thrive and continue to
grow to everyone's benefit as your poetry 'gets out there'.
