Tony Valuch, Poet
Tony Valuch
Poet

Tony Valuch
is from Toronto, Canada. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in English Literature and Education. His hobbies
include reading, writing, playing table tennis, collecting anti-quarian books, and fishing. Tony speaks English, Slovak, French, and some Korean.

He has been an English teacher since 1986 and has had the opportunity to teach in some very interesting places: an isolated Native Canadian reserve in Northern Ontario; the cold, beautiful landscapes of the Yukon Territory; the sprawling urban expanse of major cities like Toronto and Vancouver; and the exotic, far-eastern lands of South Korea.

His poetry is concerned with the natural world, man’s inner nature, societal grievances, and rites of passage. Although trying to maintain a more traditional structure in his poetry, Tony does believe that variety is the spice that’s nice! He believes that poetry should be read aloud, in the best traditions of the bards of old.

    Bloodrushes
©   Tony Valuch

Blood rushes anxiously,
Flooding fragile corridors,
Crash-cleaning branching highways

Like some brazen, rebellious youth:
Strutting with pride,
Hot, humid air
Filling flaring nostrils;

Body-bags bursting,
Bone-touching-bone,
Morphing into frenzy

Like some lackluster pool:
Gulping champagne rain,
Soaking up suds,
Healthy. Real. Alive!

Anger breeds in bliss,
Its foul progeny laugh,
Spit in civilized contempt

Like some wine-soaked,
Unshaven, unclean, uncouth,
Transient, gutter-schooled
Professor of poverty;

Eyes bulge obscenely,
Pallid orbs frozen,
Locked on target

Like some sweet innocent,
Mama-pampered, father-guided,
Run-of-the-mill, average
Teenager busted for pot;

Grin-trace creeps,
Streaks cross a flushed,
Reddening facescape

Like some modest maiden:
Newly-wedded, never-bedded,
Consumed in celebration,
Filled with anticipation;

Years, hours, and minutes
Are measured in experience:
The realm of bloodrushes.
