Private Time

Each child
empties
a handful
of dirt
onto
his casket

Her fingers
move slowly
each granule
slipping away
as did he
when she could
no longer
hold him

Before leaving
a single
red rose
drops
from
a black
gloved hand
falling
where
closed eyes
might have
Winked.

   Have I Told You Lately?

Have I told you about my coming transfer
to a new city six hundred miles from here?
Have I kept up with goings on with our kids
and your interests during the past weeks?
Have I explained that those extra hours
are demanded for me to get ahead?
Have I the time to catch up with the kids'
school work and their sports teams?
Have I left too many decisions for you
about family finances and our home?
Have you been proud of me in my work
or resentful that I am absent too often?
Have the children forgotten my part
in their lives and how much I love them?
And above all else some magic words
Have I told you lately that I love you?
