           The Bucket

The bucket sits empty
in the back yard
Alone on the grass,
it seems like mere clutter.

You descend the stairs of the patio
into this play world and
the bucket becomes so much more.
“I need water daddy,
I need water mommy”

Now full and transformed
from bucket to puddle, pool, pot, ocean …
quarts stones from the garden
splash… they are fish that swim,
potatoes you cook,
friends diving off the edge

All your toys surround you
bought to inspire and entertain you,
flashing toys, colourful toys, expensive toys,
but this simple bucket
and a handful of rocks
are you seem to need

Chill in the air, sun setting,
bath and bottle beckon.
Bucket tipped over
empty again, waits patiently
until tomorrow
to be transformed again.
