Montserrat's Rain Forests Under Siege
Golden petals fall,
And hot ash roughly
kisses
Dying foliage.
The oriole droops;
Head tucked under
folded wings
Waiting out the
storm.
Mountain chickens
hide,
Annoyed at ash
emitted
By Madame Soufriere.
Mother Nature smiles
On ash-covered
foliage.
She makes soft rain
fall.
Inhale sweet, clean
air
And, in the wild,
roosters strut,
Eyeing the fat hens.
The setting sun
sighs.
In the cleansed
forests, all’s well,
And peace reigns once
more.
Tiny tree frogs sing,
Welcoming the velvet
night,
Soon adorned by
stars.

Gemini
Sometimes,
The rain falls and I
bow my head
Wallowing in
self-pity as though I were dead.
Sometimes,
A swift-winged
hummingbird comes to feed
And fills my heart
with great stirrings of glee.
Sometimes,
I tread upon the
earth while musing
Uncaring for the
flowers trampled in passing.
Sometimes,
In the sky, stormy
clouds break apart
And I see a weed with
petals a work of art.
Sometimes,
I sink into hell, and
my forlorn plea
Becomes testimony to
my twin personality,
And sometimes,
I sing, on high,
duets with my celestial twin
While music flows
from a million-dollar violin.
Then skies clear and,
once again, I am whole
The sun brings light
to my divided soul
While my aching
heart, sated, fills with bells
And rises to Heaven
in a chorus of angels
For I am Gemini –
decked in silks and sateen
Doomed to highs,
lows, and all in-between
My soul is bared
when, before you, I sing
Separated into two, I
am Yang and Ying
Each half enhances
the other, as day to night.
So I glow as I sing,
dance, paint and write.
With each twin
coexisting with the other
Like a gentle sister,
yet as strong as a brother
I am a child of
nature who loves the stage
The colours of autumn
- red, gold and orange
I am an open book;
it’s plain for all to see
Just who I am - for I
was chosen to be -
A Gemini!
