SATURDAY MORNING HEROES
When I was a child, Saturday mornings
were a haven, where cartoon heroes were dependable
as daybreak. Since then,
my tastes for Saturday mornings
have changed flavour; there are new heroes,
equally dependable, that I watch in awe.
I watch my father recover from the workweek
by waking up first thing and making breakfast
for the entire family. There must be
something therapeutic in reading the same directions
from the same, finger-smudged recipe cards,
something reassuring in the fact that
this weekend, breakfast still tastes as good.
I watch my mother slide her feet slowly
through the house, awaiting
the morning coffee and morning paper;
I admire the ease with which
she slips into the weekend.
I watch my sister arrive, drowsy-eyed,
hoping that she hasn’t missed out
on any of life’s little mysteries, which are
slowly revealed
as the sunlight, reflected off snow,
opens its arms across the ceiling.
