Melissa Leavitt — Poet, Cumberland, MD

I am a 44 yr old housewife, and I also train my own horses.  I am also a mixed blood Native American with Euro, Irish ancestry.  I  very much have a passion for my Native American ancestry and I try to walk the good red road as closely as I can.   I am active politically to Native American causes and speak my mind about injustices that is done against them, now and in the past.

I camp and ride my bicycle which I have a passion for I feel I am doing my duty not to add to the pollution problem we all face every day. When camping this is where I write
my poems, this generally where they come to me, when sitting on mother earth, or they come from a deep emotional  issue that I am going through.

REFLECTION

I looked into the clear river and what did I
see my ancestors reflections, looking back at me.

Ancestors of a time long ago
to be remembered by being
reflected to me.

Women dressed in buckskin dress's
warriors who dances like eagles so  free
a people with courage but ripped apart
by the cruelty of a white mans heart

Torn from lands, family and friends
torn from everything sacred
as there time ends.

A time  of harmony, peace and love,
a time of reflections of life held so sacred

Reflections of a life that still should be
Reflections of faces I realized looked a lot like me.
