An Untimely Renovation

Short Story

Nayanna Chakrbarty,  Mumbai, India

Nayanna’s inspiration to write comes from mundane living, thrilling her audience with simple  unpredictable twists at the end of her stories.    http://www.original-writer.com/

“Aah…choo!” Melissa sneezed, ripping the wallpaper but maintaining her balance on the ladder.

“A hole in the wall?   Strange,” she thought and curiously peeped. Large, bulging eyes stared at her. They looked surreal, without eyelids or lashes. The curious onlooker from the other side tilted his head and kept on gaping.

“Oh my God! It’s got a green skin.” Icy hands of terror grabbed and threw Melissa off-guard. She crashed to the floor, hollering in pain with the ladder collapsing on top of her. The right ankle felt numb. Suddenly, a riveting sound vibrated through the apartment almost deafening her. A powerful machine roared, sucking out all the energy, causing the lights to flicker. Then it was quiet. Before she could release a sigh of relief, it was back.

“Grrrrrrrrrrrlllllllll.”  The green goblin was drilling through her wall. “It’s hunting for me,” said Melissa, whimpering. Stretching, she tried to reach for the phone. As she lunged to pull the cord, she lost her grip and ripped the connection from the socket. “I’m doomed.”

The plaster on her wall slowly started crumbling. It was getting closer. “Bang, Bang.” The bulbs blew out one by one. She lay on the floor, watching the drill making a perfect, circular hole.

“It’s watching me. I can feel it.” Melissa rolled under the bed, hoping that the darkness would shield her. But the revenge of the dust mites struck her, triggering a series of sneeze. “The window." Despite the pain, she slithered on the floor to reach for it. Curtains ripped from the rod as she tugged to climb on the ledge.

“Thud! Grrrrrlllll.”  The front door was under attack.  “It’s here. I ...I … have to escape.  She closed her eyes. “One…two…”  Green-scaly hands grabbed her. The heavy creature pinned her on the floor, breathing down heavily.

“Let me go,” yelled Melissa, struggling.

“Calm down, Miss.”
In dismay, she opened her eyes. A construction worker was on top of her.

“I’m renovating next door. Sorry for the damage. Today’s my first day on the job,” he said, smiling and adjusted his green cap.

Melissa’s trembling nerves slowly relaxed looking at a handsome face. But those eyes… they were back, now staring from the top of his head. It was Kermit- the frog. He was part of the
design of the man’s hat. Melissa laughed, realizing that her alien encounter was of a neighborly kind.
