R. J. Bates — Poet, Scarborough, ON

         I'm a former graphic artist, raised in Willowdale (North York) living in Scarborough for the lions share of my 62 years.
         Have undying aspirations to actually do something with the writing abilities God has given me.
         I write songs, poems, stories. screenplays (of sorts), and have a lot of free time on my hands but seem to lack the life skills to optimize it all.

SPILL THE BEANS

Jungle rain and mountain breezes

And valleys raise the markets' share

Kenyas' best [each bag appeases]

Corporate gods - the bull and bear

It's worth its weight - the black man offers

Up his back, his pain and time

Filling cups of two buck coffee

For nine tenths less than a one- tenth dime

We give our thanks to rhyme and reason

For keeping cans upon the rack

God bless the wheel and laud the season

May growers thrive above their lack
