Our Poetry Contest Winners
There are all kinds of wonderful celebrations,
festivals and events through out Durham Region. But I noticed
that while music, children and ethnic culture were popular
themes, there was a lack of an event celebrating the best of
Durham Region's poets, authors, writers, readers, story tellers,
filmmakers and songwriters.
In September 2006, and while working on another
event, I began sharing my goal of one day establishing a
literary festival in Durham Region. Listening that night was my
husband, Graham, and two close friends, Winnie Chapman and John
Duarte. The three looked at each other. John said, “Let’s do
it,” and Graham and Winnie agreed. There rest, as they
say, is history…in the making. :-)
Although we do not see ourselves as an academic
festival, we seek to advance authors of literary quality. We are
not book fair in which the primary objective is to sell books.
This is a celebration / festival for everyone in the community
in an informal atmosphere encouraging discussion and
conversation among all of those in attendance
Our Mandate:
The Stellar
Literary Festival celebrates established and emerging Durham
Region / GTA writers, poets, readers, story tellers,
filmmakers & songwriters.
The festival aims to engage the community in Durham Region's
rich and diverse literary culture, bringing attention to local
poets, writers, songwriters and story tellers. The goal is to
make Durham Region destination for literacy-loving audiences
that are not just 'book-worms' ;-)
We make it our mandate to feature the voices of our community.
The Durham Region has a diverse collection of creative artists,
unlike many other regions in Canada. The Stellar Literary
Festival is dedicated to those talents.

Congratulations on a first class FESTIVAL. Wow, what a lot of
work and organization.
I really like the fact that people were free to come and
go.....listening ,watching , browsing
and chatting !The Botanical Gardens presented a beautiful place
for your event ...so free
and casual. It is always good to meet , share ideas and talk
with like minded people .
Thank you so much for inviting us to participate in this
wonderful event!
I wanted to thank you for all you did in putting on the
Festival. Holly and I enjoyed our day in that beautiful setting.
You had a good lineup of speakers and readers, and of course, we
enjoyed seeing friends there.
I was impressed with the professionalism behind the Festival
(the banner, the programs, the main tent and seating, the emcee,
the tables supplied, and the sponsors). My congratulations to
both you and Graham.
The poetry contest and the festival (and setting) were
absolutely wonderful. I loved it. Thank you for all of your
hard work to make this event happen. It was a marvelous event.
I hope to see you next year.
Take care and have a great winter season!
