    First Place - Anna Halawa

Anna Halawa
is thirteen years old and began writing short stories as a young child, which then evolved into more complex forms of poetry and varying literature.  She has many hobbies, some of which are horseback riding, figure skating and skiing, but writing is number one.  As she enters high school next year, she is positive her passion for writing will grow.

        All Spirit

The thunder of hooves
In canter stride
By the laws of his nature
The horse must abide.

So instead of galloping
Through mountain and creek
He waits for the rider
As though mild and meek.

But when the time comes
Human law he defies
The fire of fierceness
Glows in the depth of his eyes.

All this is spirit
What the horse has inside
In the horse's being
The spirit has not died.

Mane Of Pegasus

A whirl of silver
Flowing in the breeze
A river of colour
Never to cease.

Looking down on mere horses
Grazing far below
Laughing at horse's chained to land
Where they are not forced to go.

The emblem of pegasus
Flowing through the day
At night but a constellation
Of moonlight a shining ray.

A fountain of silver
To the city it nears
Then over the horizon

A guide to life
Given by a friend
Words in a storybook
A fairy tale with no end.

No "happily ever after"
The princess is far away
Lured, trapped and seduced
In her prison she will stay.

Not a courtier, a palace
Or a Prince Charming in sight
Instead crime and cruelty
No pure soul, no heart of white.

No matter what the naive may think
Life is not a fairy tale
Life is but a storybook
Which reading we can never fail.
