Sad Earth (Villanelle)
Mournfully tolls a solitary bell
to stir the conscience of the human brain
for dying forests where no creatures dwell
for war-torn countries with terrors to tell
of men killing men with nothing to gain
mournfully tolls a solitary bell
millions starve where decay and death smell
pollution rampant a planet in pain
for dying forests where no creatures dwell
for precious resources dug up to sell
for polar caps melting and acid rain
mournfully tolls a solitary bell
for toxic oil spills the world weeps as well
for extinction of species sought in vain
for dying forests where no creatures dwell
streams in floodwaters of compassion swell
for an earth that’s cracking under the strain
mournfully tolls a solitary bell
for dying forests where no creatures dwell

Learn To Swim
Standing on the brink of what is my life,
a towering malestrom heaves before me.
As I move closer to the edge, I can see the sea beneath me,
swirling black, promising failure,
it wants to devour me.
Suddnely the wind pushes me over the edge.
Wait! I'm not ready yet!
Falling faster, faster,
No return in sight.
But wait! There are others,
swimming against the current.
There is hope,
I just have to learn to swim.

Mother Nature
The clouds turn dark and angry
Mother Nature vents her wrath;
Winds race by with breakneck speed
frightening all that's in their path.
She sends the full force sheets of rain
teaming down with mighty force;
The rivers rise above the banks,
no knowledge of the raging source.
As suddenly as they appeared,
the signs of rampage disappear;
Mother Nature returns to sleep,
taking with her all the fear.
